Road traffic accident data (STATS19)

31 January 2014

What is it? STATS19 forms are completed for all road traffic accidents that are reported to the police and where the accident resulted in an injury. Eight years of detailed STATS19 data have been published as Open Data by the Department for Transport, and this data has been summarised at a range of geographic scales and uploaded to the Wakefield Observatory.

Example statistic: The general trend in the number of accidents is downward. The largest decrease at ward level in 2012 was in Wakefield Rural ward. In 2011 there had been 154 casualties, but this fell to 60 in 2012. In contrast, in Pontefract North ward the number of casualties rose from 59 to 91.

Where to find it: Graphs showing how accident levels have changed over time have been added to the Area Profiles for Priority Neighbourhoods, wards and the seven areas (follow the links on the front page of the Wakefield Observatory). Tables of data and interactive mapping is also available at,
