Background

  • Wakefield is recognised as having responded well to the economic downturn. Wakefield Together's economic taskforce supported both individuals and businesses through a difficult period. and recognises that a strong and sustainable local economy is central to a better future for all communities and people. In particular, building skills in young people will be key to a stronger more sustained economy.

  • In 2014 there were 1,310 births of new enterprises, up from 1,260 in 2013 and just 915 the year before that. The proportion of new enterprises surviving three years is now 58.4%. This is an improvement on the previous year but survival rate are still a bit lower than the England average (60.4%). (ONS, 24th November 2015)

  • In line with the national trends, the Annual Population Survey shows employment in Wakefield (71.7%) is now at its highest level since 2008. (11th November 2015)
